Diver Survives Shark Attack 30 Miles Off Pensacola

A 40-year-old diver was attacked by a shark Tuesday, September 1, during a spearfishing trip about 30 miles offshore of Pensacola.

Boat captain Jacob Johnson said the group had encountered several sharks throughout the day. During the final dive, the diver was bitten on both forearms and could not get back into the boat.

Johnson pulled him aboard while the group worked to control the bleeding. They used a shirt as a makeshift tourniquet, along with clotting material and zip ties.

The Coast Guard launched a response boat and intercepted the group about 5.5 miles south of Pensacola Pass. The injured diver was transferred to Naval Air Station Pensacola and flown to Sacred Heart Hospital.

He suffered artery damage in one arm and required dozens of stitches in the other. After surgery, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

Johnson identified the shark as a bull shark, though the Coast Guard has not officially confirmed the species.

The incident is a reminder that anyone heading offshore should carry proper emergency supplies, maintain reliable communication equipment and have a plan for getting help.
